During high school, you will have to write research papers quite often and you need to know how to handle them in proper way. There are many rules to follow even when you have to use the simple MLA style, and your professor will pay attention to every detail. For example, you know that citations are vital for a good composition, but you don’t always know what sources to choose and how to cite them. These rules will help you with your assignment:
- Don’t take information without verifying it. This is one of the worst things that you can do, and even if you will have a long and interesting research paper your professor will not give you high marks. When you don’t verify the information there is a great risk to write something that it not only incorrect, but sometimes even false. If your teacher and colleagues discover this they will assume that you did not bother to write your assignment in good way.
- Create a Works Cited page. You are not always required to create such a page, that is why you might forget that you have to do it. However, your professor will expect to see it so you have to prepare it a few days before you submit the paper. On this page you will mention the source and the author of every citation, as well as the page from the book from where you took the quote. If you have this information you can also write the year when the book was published, just to show them that you actually care about your assignments.
- Use in-text citations. This is a great way to introduce a certain information without having to copy an entire paragraph from another book. To create in-text citations you have to mention what the author wanted to say and in what book. For example, you can say that author X said that humans are smart in the book Y. You will save some space and you will not have so many things to write on your works cited page. Of course, if you really want to write an entire paragraph you can do it, but make sure you don’t introduce any useless information that will take people’s attention away from the main idea of the text.
